The Bears fall in heartbreaking fashion to the Cougars

 Kokomo, Ind. – Shawnee State baseball lost in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Indiana Kokomo 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

IU Kokomo would take an early lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Mason Bruce would single to left field. Bruce would then score on Matt Simmerman’s triple to left-center field, putting the Cougars up 1-0.

Kokomo would score again in the bottom of the third. Kody Bledsoe would lead off the inning with the Cougars’ second triple of the game. Jared Heard would then double to right-center to score Bledsoe, but would be thrown out at third trying to stretch to a triple. Still, the Cougars would take a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning.

Shawnee State would get on the board in the top of the fourth. Seth Clement would single to right field to lead off the inning, then steal second base. Clement would make it to third on JT Boggs’ groundout to second base. Levi Jones would then single to center field to cut the Indiana Kokomo lead to 2-1.

The Bears would tie the game in the top of the sixth. Christian Helton would lead off with an infield single to shortstop, and would steal second. Helton would then steal third on Clements’ looking strikeout. Boggs would then single to left to bring Helton home, tying the game at 2-2.

Indiana Kokomo would re-take the lead in the bottom half of the sixth. Caleb Matthews would reach on a walk, and get to second on a groundout by Noah Darr. Eston Stull would come in as a pinch runner for Matthews and steal third base. Bruce would then single in Stull, giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

Shawnee State would again rally to tie the game again in the top of the seventh. Joseph Campos would single to lead off the inning, and would steal second with one out. Campos would then get to third after IU Kokomo catcher John Tuttle threw wild into center field. Zach Straley would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Campos and tie the game at 3-3.

The Cougars would walk off in the bottom of the ninth inning. Josh Fewell would lead off the inning with a single, and get to second on a groundout from Tuttle. Pinch hitter Noah Etchison would single to right to get Fewell to third base. Jared Heard would then hit a grounder to third base, but Zach Straley’s throw home would go wild, allowing Fewell to score and give Indiana Kokomo a 4-3 walk-off win over Shawnee State.

Gage Shell got the win for Indiana Kokomo, allowing no runs on one hit in two innings of scoreless relief. James West took the loss, allowing one run on three hits in one-third off an inning.

The loss drops Shawnee State to 12-19 on the season. Indiana Kokomo improves to 22-15-1 on the year.

Shawnee State baseball returns to action on Wednesday, April 11 when they take on Ohio University in a rescheduled game from last Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:00pm.
