Due to their focus on the children and community of Scioto County, the Kiwanis
Club has successfully helped many homes in need for years, with various events such as giving out scholarships and sponsoring Kids Day. These events make a tremendous impact on the County, providing opportunities many area children would not have otherwise.
Matt Hammer, of Melcher Funeral Home and Portsmouth Kiwanis President-elect (to be president in October), explained, “Kiwanis is a great civic organization that focuses it’s efforts on children. We sponsor 6 different Key clubs in Scioto County, which are like junior Kiwanis clubs, and those kids are instrumental in canned food drives, blood donation events with the Red Cross, planning local clean up days in our community, and many other events. too numerous to mention.”

The Kiwanis’ Pancake Day event helps to raise funds so the organization can continue in these efforts.

Hammer explained that Pancake Day will be celebrated with flapjacks, of course. Pancake Day flapjacks will be offered from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18 at the Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Friends Center in Portsmouth. Carry-out is also available. Tickets are $6 and can be bought from any Kiwanis member or at the door on the day of the event.

Throughout the year, the Kiwanis provided scholarships of $1000 each to local kids who are going to attend Shawnee State University. The club also built and maintains Tracy Park across from Kroger and sponsors a kids day in the fall, that is held in said park.

“We have free face painting, hot dogs, chips and several other kid friendly events that day,” Hammer stated.

He added that the Kiwanis is a great way to meet people in the Portsmouth community. Club members come from varied backgrounds.

“We have members that are bankers, insurance agents, real estate brokers, politicians, funeral home owners and even a professional baseball player,” Hammer commented. “I have met people in this club that will be lifelong friends. We are always looking for new members. We always meet on Wednesdays from 11:45-1:00 p.m. at Oscar’s lounge at the holiday inn hotel.”
