Baseball falls in final game against Lindsey Wilson

The Blue Raiders strike early, silence SSU bats to sweep series

Shawnee State baseball fell in the final game of their series with Lindsey Wilson, as the Blue Raiders completed their sweep of the Bears with a 12-0 victory.

Lindsey Wilson would take the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ben Heideman would hit a one-out double to get to second base, and move to third on a wild pitch by Shawnee State starting pitcher Sam Gerhold. Tyler Maskill would reach on a walk, and Oliver Baez would hit a grounder to second baseman Seth Clement, who would bobble the ball and allow Heideman to score.

The Blue Raiders would blow the game open in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs. Nick Sanders would lead off with a home run to put Lindsey Wilson up 2-0. With one out, Seth Price would walk, and get to third on Alec Salcedo’s single down the right field line. Heideman would follow with a single to drive in Price, putting two on with one out. Steven Calderon would walk to load the bases, and Maskill doubled down the left field line to drive in Salcedo and Heideman. Baez would hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Calderon to make the score 6-0 Lindsey Wilson after two.

Lindsey Wilson would score two more in the bottom of the fourth. Heideman would hit another leadoff double, and would get to third on Calderon’s groundout to second. Maskill would single through the hole at shortstop to drive in Heideman. Maskill would get to second on a wild pitch by SSU reliever Jesse James, and score on a double by Baez.

Lindsey Wilson was not done, pushing across another run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Ben Heideman would double and score on Calderon’s single. Manny Chavarria would then hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving Lindsey Wilson the final 12-0 score.

Ricky Winfield got the win, allowing no runs on five hits in six innings, striking out five. Sam Gerhold took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in three innings.

The loss drops Shawnee State to 12-18 on the season, and 1-10 in the Mid-South Conference. Lindsey Wilson improves to 18-18, and to 7-4 in the league.

Shawnee State baseball returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 when they hit the road to take on Indiana University Kokomo. First pitch of the single game at Kokomo Municipal Stadium is set for 4:00pm.
