Shawnee State University’s (SSU) Vern Riffe Center For the Arts will be hosting it’s fifth bi-annual Vern Riffe After Dark program. The event is an art show that features the artistic talents of not only SSU students, but also any and all community members that would like to show off their artwork.
The Vern Riffe Center for the Arts started the show about two and a half years ago and have done two shows a year since. Joe Patti, Vern Riffe Center for the Arts Director, explained that Vern Riffe After Dark is a great opportunity for members of the community to show and sell their art, while also engaging with viewers about their artistic processes. Patti added that it is a very informal environment where people can talk about what inspires them in their art rather than the technological aspects of art.
There are also a lot of hands-on activities at the show, due to their partnership with The Creative C*ult based in Portsmouth. The Creative C*ult is a local organization that offers workshops and other services that help participants explore creativity and gain confidence in the creative arts.
The deadline for art entries is March 9. As Patti stated, SSU likes to have a few weeks before the show to display the art in local businesses. This not only rallies interest in the After Dark program, but also gets people to shop locally and visit more businesses in the area.
“People don’t realize the hidden talent of their neighbors,” Patti commented.
Those who would like to submit a piece of art for the Vern Riffe After Dark program, can visit vrcfa.com for submission forms. The Vern Riffe After Dark series will be on display from 7 to 10 p.m. on April 12th at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts on the SSU campus in Portsmouth.
